Visitors Guide to Kefalonia must see!

The island of Kefalonia, with its 237 km long coastline, boasts 39 beautiful of sandy, pebble or gravel beaches! Although its difficult to pick where to start planning, we hope our list will help you form your best visit!

The Infamous ones: 

  1. Myrtos Beach: White pebbles, deep waters, organized with parasols, umbrellas, a canteen , changing room and WC. Free parking is available however  during high season it is advised to get there by 11:00am to find a spot for your car. 
  2. Antisamos Beach: White pebbles, deep waters, organized with parasols, umbrellas, several canteens that also include free parking spaces, changing room and WC. Water sports are also offered during summer season.
  3. Makris & Platis Gialos Beach:  Sandy, Family Friendly, Well-Organized, two adjacent coasts at the seaside resort of Lassi and only a few minutes away from Argostoli, Platis and Makris Gialos boast fine sand, azure waters and an exotic ambience created by the lush, steep cliffs that envelop the shore.
  4. Skala: Partly-Organized, Sandy with small colorful stones , deep waters, Family Friendly, Watersports are available. Even in peak mid August you will always find a sweet spot to relax and unwind. Very often than not you will hear a lot of Greek as it is preferred by locals as well for its vast size and calm afternoon vibe. 
  5. Petani: found on the peninsula of Paliki, Petani is a scenic coast of crystalline waters, lush greenery and a mostly sandy coast. This is also the place to be in order to enjoy one of the most awe-inspiring sunsets in the Ionian.
  6. Alaties Beach: White pebbles in combination with white sand, unorganized but you can find food, drinks and a bathroom on the restaurant right above the beach. A very small sandy beach surrounded by a rocky landscape. It is located only 9 km away from Fiscardo but is the locals hidden gem! Romantic tip: Combine an afternoon swim at Alaties watch the amazing deep colors of the sunset and head to the taverna of the beach ALATI ALL DAY BAR & RESTAURANT for a lovely romantic dinner with Greek cuisine. An advance reservation is proposed especially during July , August and September. 

Best for families with babies and toddlers with shallow entrance , sandy coastline and luke warm waters:

  1. Ai Helis beach: Sandy, Family Friendly, Well-Organized.
  2. Ammes beach : Sandy, Family Friendly, Well-Organized.
  3. Avithos beach: Sandy, Family Friendly, Well-Organized. Tip! Combine your visit with a taste of traditional Greek and Kefalonian dishes at Avithos Preview Taverna right above the beach and have  a taste of the locally produced wines of Sarris Winery served at the taverna! 
  4. Minies beach: Partly-Organized, Sandy, Family Friendly. Minies is the closest beach to the airport of Kefalonia. It is usual for bathers to see planes take on and off above their heads.
  5. Katelios beach: Partly-Organized, Sandy, Family Friendly with many options of tavernas that serve fresh fish right from this bay! Tip: If you look for fresh fish choices in the South this is the best village to enjoy lobster pasta , swordfish , squid and many other fish options! 

Top Attractions in Kefalonia no one should miss

  1. Myrtos Beach
    Famous for its white pebbles and turquoise waters, Myrtos Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. It is a must-visit for any traveler.
  2. Melissani Cave
    A breathtaking underground lake with crystal-clear waters, Melissani Cave is best explored by boat. The sunlight filtering through the cave creates a magical effect.
  3. Assos Village
    This picturesque fishing village is known for its Venetian-style houses, charming harbor, and the ruins of Assos Castle.
  4. Fiskardo
    The only village on the island that remained intact after the 1953 earthquake, Fiskardo is filled with traditional architecture, high-end restaurants, and scenic harbor views.

Best Time to Visit Kefalonia 

The ideal time to visit Kefalonia is between May and October.

During these months, the weather is warm, and the sea is perfect for swimming. 

July and August are the peak tourist months, while May, June, and September offer a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures.

  • Explore the Drogarati Cave, known for its impressive stalactites and acoustics.

  • Visit the Saint Gerasimos Monastery, an important religious site in Kefalonia.
  • Enjoy a sunset at Lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi.
  • Enjoy scenic road routes such as the mountain route of Falari leading from Argostoli town to Myrtos Beach and Fiskardo, the road from St Gerasimos monastery to Skala village is an amazing coastal scenery that combines mountain and sea views en route!

  • Do not miss out on the summer music festivals filled with traditional music , often in combination with local food and wine at the Panigyri festivals organized in several villages (information is available on local road banners  ) every summer and become one with the locals!
